Alternate Fuel to Control the pollution Compressed Natural Gas (CNG):
CNG (short for Compressed Natural Gas) is emerging as an attractive alternative fuel due to its clean burning characteristic and very low amount of exhaust pollution. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons consisting of approximately 80 to 90 percent methane in gaseous form.
It is compressed to a pressure of 200 to 250 Kg/Cm2 to enhance the vehicle on-board storage in a cylinder Facilities for dispensing of CNG in vehicles are being provided by Indraprastha Gas Limited.Currently, 133 CNG filling stations (as in May, 2005) have been set up in Delhi. Some useful information about CNG conversion is given below:
a. The cost of CNG kit and its installation in a car ranges between Rs.30, 000/- to 35,000/-.
b. 1 Kg. of CNG is energy equivalent to 1.39 liters of petrol and 1.18 liters of diesel.
c. An amount of 8/9/10 Kg. CNG is stored in 40/50/60 litre size cylinder respectively which is equivalent to 11.2/12.5/14 liters of petrol equivalent. Vehicles can also be run on petrol in case it runs out of CNG.
Further details about CNG run vehicles can be obtained from M/s Indraprastha Gas Limited, IGL Bhawan, Plot No. 4, Community Centre, Sector 9, R K Puram, New Delhi. Phone: 91-11-46074607. In Delhi about 0.55 million of vehicles are running on CNG
